Production history around: Circles

Image
This piece goes into the history of how my short film   ‘Circles’  came to be. Flashing light warning  for this one!! 🔵 🔴 🟡 🟢 🟣 🟠 🔵 🔴 🟡 🟢 🟣 🟠 The film which I consider the first in my artistic, chance-filmmaking journey is ‘ Broodiest Flunkey’.  While I have been creating films since I was very little to various degrees. This is the first one where I had an image in my mind of doing it seriously. This film was originally created, both for my MA Experience Design course, and so it could be shown at  Imperfect Cinema’s   Cinaesthesia 2  event, which was run by  Patrycja Loranc . As part of this event, there was the ability in the morning to attend a workshop. In attendance was my wife Isobel, Tim Francis, Sam Johnson, Patrycja Loranc, Dan Paolantonio, Kate Stubbs, and myself. The purpose of this workshop was for all of us to collectively contribute to a film which would be shown at the end of the event. Most of us would film the f...

Production history around: After Images

Time for another look into one of my films, ‘ After Images ’. This was filmed in the nightclub ‘ Images ’ which is in Plymouth city centre. I only started going there this year (2024), and it’s a cool place to meet alternative and inclusive people. It is funny that a lot of alternative people can look quite scary on the outside, but are some of the sweetest people you can ever meet. That is often the case I think though. The club represents, to me, many of the people I have met so far in my art journey these past 6 months. I won’t name names for privacy reasons, but there are a few that go there who I have met through  Imperfect Cinema , some from my current university course, some from Anime society, etc. It feels like a great encapsulation of my life post-joining my  MA Experience Design degree , which is a far cry from my life prior. How this film came to be: for a few of the previous events I attended it happened to be quite dark. This was mostly because they took p...

Production history around: Eggistential

Image
This piece goes into some of the decisions I made when creating my short film   ‘Eggistential’ . After creating my short ‘ Circles ’ I wanted to create a piece that was less about searching (‘ Graffiti ’ falls into this category too), and more about using elements outside of my control and at home like ‘ Doggy Style’ . The ‘ tsukanoma no haikyo ’ works of Miyamoto were still on my mind, and I wanted to know how I could capture themes of destruction in my own work. I found it interesting that, in the art world, creation and destruction were often seen as one and the same. In order to make something, something else had to be altered in some way. I noticed that this mirrored cooking. You can  make  a cake, but is this also not the destruction of the raw elements in order to transform them into something else? The end of Eggistential is interesting, as it takes people a bit to notice that the footage is reversed, pushing in the idea that destruction and creation are ha...
